Disciples’ Confession, The Narrow Cross Path
Scripture Text (LSV)
Matthew 16:5-28: “And His disciples having come to the other side, they forgot to take loaves. And Jesus said to them, ‘Beware, and take heed of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’ And they were reasoning among themselves, saying, ‘Because we took no loaves.’ And Jesus having known, said to them, ‘Why do you reason among yourselves, you of little faith, because you took no loaves? Do you not yet understand? Do you not remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up? Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up? How do you not understand that I did not speak to you of bread concerning the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees?’ Then they understood that He did not say to take heed of the leaven of the bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. And Jesus having come to the parts of Caesarea Philippi, was asking His disciples, saying, ‘Who do men say Me to be—the Son of Man?’ And they said, ‘Some, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.’ He says to them, ‘And you—who do you say Me to be?’ And Simon Peter answering said, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.’ And Jesus answering said to him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona, because flesh and blood did not reveal it to you, but My Father who is in the heavens. And I also say to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church, and gates of Hades shall not prevail against it; and I will give to you the keys of the reign of the heavens, and whatever you may bind upon the earth shall be having been bound in the heavens, and whatever you may loose upon the earth shall be having been loosed in the heavens.’ Then He charged His disciples that they may say to no one that He is Jesus the Christ. From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that it is necessary for Him to go to Jerusalem, and to suffer many things from the elders, and chief priests, and scribes, and to be killed, and the third day to be raised. And Peter having taken Him aside, began to rebuke Him, saying, ‘Be kind to Yourself, Lord; this shall not be to You.’ And He having turned, said to Peter, ‘Go behind Me, adversary! You are a stumbling-block to Me, because you do not mind the things of God, but the things of men.’ Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone wills to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me; for whoever may will to save his life shall lose it, and whoever may lose his life for My sake shall find it. For what is a man profited if he may gain the whole world, but of his soul suffer loss? Or what shall a man give as an exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man is about to come in the glory of His Father, with His messengers, and then He shall reward each according to his work. Verily I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste of death till they may see the Son of Man coming in His reign.'”
Spiritual Meaning
This passage reveals the foundation and cost of the establishment of Christ’s kingdom. The core truth lies in the transition from “human religious speculation” to “divine revelatory confession,” and subsequently leads this confession into the truth-loop of “self-denial and suffering.” Through the warning of leaven, Peter’s confession, and the prophecy of Christ’s passion, the passage strictly strips away the remnants of worldly utilitarianism and religious hypocrisy from the disciples’ lives. The spiritual intent aims to establish: the foundation of the church must be built upon the absolute confession of the divine fact of Christ’s death and resurrection, and whoever minds the things of the flesh and resists the path of suffering of the cross is merely an adversary power contrary to the divine will.
Scriptures Meditation
‘Beware, and take heed of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’
The “leaven” (ζύμη) symbolizes hidden, penetrating influence. It refers not to material bread, but to the legalism of “hypocrisy” of the Pharisees and the “rationalism” of the Sadducees that denies supernatural power. Both types of leaven erode pure trust in Christ, trapping the soul in religious fraud and worldly shrewdness.
And Simon Peter answering said, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.’
The term “Christ” (Χριστός) denotes the Messiah, the anointed King; “Son of the Living God” (υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ ζῶντος) points directly to His essential unity with the Father. Peter’s confession was not the result of logic derived from flesh and blood, but the result of the sovereign “revelation” (ἀποκάλυψις) of the Father, which constitutes the sole foundation of the church (ἐκκλησία), a rock that the powers of Hades cannot overcome.
And Peter having taken Him aside, began to rebuke Him, saying, ‘Be kind to Yourself, Lord; this shall not be to You.’
Immediately after reaching the spiritual peak of confession, Peter fell into “the things of men” (τὰ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου). He attempted to use worldly political logic or emotional comfort to evade the suffering of the cross that Christ must endure. This ostensibly “well-meaning” rebuke is, in essence, a fundamental resistance to the divine plan of redemption.
‘Go behind Me, adversary! You are a stumbling-block to Me, because you do not mind the things of God, but the things of men.’
The word “mind” (φρονεῖς) means to set one’s focus on something. Christ’s rebuke of Peter is brutally cold because any intent that prioritizes human comfort or ease above God’s will to suffer is, behind the scenes, a satanic scheme to obstruct the completion of the cross. In this moment, Peter becomes a “stumbling-block” (σκάνδαλον) to the truth.
‘If anyone wills to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.’
To “deny himself” (ἀπαρνησάσθω ἑαυτόν) means a total rejection and refusal of self-sovereignty; to “take up his cross” (ἀράτω τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ) does not refer to life’s frustrations, but a voluntary surrender while walking toward the gallows. This is the rigid prerequisite for following Christ—severing every path of self-preservation to obtain the eternal life in Christ.
‘For whoever may will to save his life shall lose it, and whoever may lose his life for My sake shall find it.’
Here, “life” (ψυχή) refers to the self-preservation right of the soul. Whoever attempts to preserve the worldly self and resists the path of self-denial will ultimately suffer the total loss of the true meaning of life in judgment; only those who die to the old self under the sovereignty of Christ and completely forfeit worldly interests can find the true nature of life granted by God in eternity.
Words Application
The truth-loop of following Christ lies in the rejection of all hypocrisy and utilitarianism that “minds the things of men.” If a life still pursues religious prominence or evades the suffering path of the cross, it is essentially feeding the “leaven of the Pharisees.” Confessing Christ as the Son of the Living God must immediately be transformed into the absolute practice of self-denial. Every struggle to preserve worldly self-comfort is a deviation from the power of the cross. The path of actual practice for life is to coldly deny the self, surrender all worldly obsessions with achievement, dignity, and stability, and take up the execution stake prepared by Christ. Choosing to mind God’s will of suffering in every decision, rather than seeking human approval or avoiding hardship, is the only path to confirm that life is indeed in Christ.
