Matthew 17:14-21: “And they having come to the crowd, there came near to Him a man, kneeling down to Him, and saying, ‘Lord, deal必mercy with my son, for he is epileptic, and suffers miserably, for many times he falls into the fire, and many times into the water; and I brought him near to Your disciples, and they were not able to heal him.’ And Jesus answering said, ‘O generation un unbelieving and perverse, till when shall I be with you? Till when shall I bear with you? Bring him to Me here;’ and Jesus rebuked him, and the demon went out of him, and the youth was healed from that hour. Then the disciples having come near to Jesus by themselves, said, ‘Why were we not able to cast him out?’ And Jesus said to them, ‘Because of your little faith; for verily I say to you, if you may have faith as a grain of mustard, you will say to this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place, and it will remove, and nothing shall be impossible to you; and this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.'”

‘and I brought him near to Your disciples, and they were not able to heal him.’
The phrase “not able” (οὐκ ἠδυνήθησαν) cruelly pronounces the utter paralysis of the disciples’ spiritual authority. The disciples had previously been commissioned and granted authority to heal diseases and cast out demons; however, in the presence of this youth deeply possessed by a demon, their outward religious identity and past experiences instantly vanished into futility. This exposes a cold reality of life: without a continuous connection to the fountain of truth, the creature possesses no self-saving or neighbor-saving path before the cruelty of dark powers, left only to be trampled by the enemy.
And Jesus answering said, ‘O generation un unbelieving and perverse, till when shall I be with you? Till when shall I bear with you?’
Christ’s sigh strikes like the thunder of judgment. The word “unbelieving” (ἄπιστος) points directly to an essential blindness toward consecutive divine miracles; “perverse” (διακρίνω—διεστραμμένη) denotes being distorted and turned aside from the straight path. The scope of Christ’s rebuke encompasses not only the religious scribes present but pierces straight into the powerless disciples. This reveals that in the divine sight, the disciples’ religious condition—lingering in sight and relying on fleshly reason—is essentially identical to that of the evil generation, falling equally under the divine “forbearance” (ἀνέξομαι).

‘for verily I say to you, if you may have faith as a grain of mustard, you will say to this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place, and it will remove, and nothing shall be impossible to you;’
The text defines the texture of faith by “a grain of mustard” (κόκκον σινάπεως). This refers not to the quantity of faith, but to its intrinsic resurrection life and absolute purity. A single grain of true faith connected to divine sovereignty, completely unadulterated, possesses the devastating authority to shake immovable boulders of darkness and trample present hindrances (“this mountain”). This is because such faith no longer relies on self-inflated religious zeal, but brings about a broken surrender of the self, allowing the sovereign power of God to pour forth unobstructed.
‘and this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.’
Christ delivers the structural law of practice to overcome absolute crises. The word “prayer” (προσευχῇ) is the complete cry and union toward divine sovereignty; “fasting” (νηστείᾳ) is the absolute negation and death of fleshly desires and reliance on sight. This kind of demon is entirely immune to religious rituals; only through prayer and fasting, which brings the life into a quality of being completely broken to the old self and absolutely dependent on divine sovereignty, can a life utterly lost under darkness be reclaimed.

If a life falls into anxiety, helplessness, and spiritual paralysis when facing the raging of darkness and the oppression of environments, it has degenerated into the “unbelieving and perverse” condition rebuked by Christ. The singular path of actual practice is to undergo a complete brokenness of the self, severing all reliance on fleshly experience and worldly interests through cold “prayer and fasting.” The quality of faith must be hammered until it is as pure as a mustard seed. When confronting any “mountain” of absolute crisis, the life must no longer attempt to dodge using human schemes, but must manifest the flow of divine power through a broken surrender to His sovereignty, thereby tearing apart the enemy’s stronghold and vindicating the immovable reality of the Kingdom.
